Central Coast, DL 871 Calvert Island

Central Coast, DL 871 Calvert Island

Known for stunning sandy beaches and incredible fishing grounds, Calvert Island sits off the central coast of BC, about 62 miles north of Port Hardy on Vancouver Island. Open to the Pacific on the west side and facing the mouth of Rivers Inlet on the south end, the Island is 20 miles long and 10 miles wide at its widest.

This is a secluded, remote getaway in a stunning region of the world that not many people get to experience. The waters surrounding Calvert Island are incredibly diverse and known for excellent fishing, kayaking and even scuba diving. The shoreline has stretches of amazing sand beaches as well as rugged, wind-swept coastline.

This property offers 155 acres with abundant frontage on an arm of Chic Chic Lake, as well as several smaller lakes and ponds. The property is on the southern end of the island, closer to the west side, approx. 2 miles to open ocean. The property is mixed vegetation, with both deciduous and evergreen trees as well as native undergrowth plants.

Access to the property would be by waterplane to the shores of Chic Chic Lake, ensuring privacy and seclusion. Hiking in across park and crown land could be an interesting challenge for the more adventurous! The island and property are completely off grid, making this the ultimate retreat from the business of the modern world.

Calvert Island is home to the Hakai Institute, a scientific research, teaching and meeting centre. The majority of the island is within Conservancies governed by BC Parks and local First Nations, with just a handful of private properties on the entire island.

“Hakai Lúxvbálís Conservancy is the largest provincial marine protected area on the British Columbia coast.” BC Ministry of Environment and Parks

There are a few remote fishing lodges in the area, attracting select visitors from around the world to experience the amazing scenery and fishing of the region.

Services and supplies are available in Port Hardy on Vancouver Island located 60 miles to the south or in Shearwater/Bella Bella located 40 miles north as well as at Dawson’s Landing in River’s Inlet, situated about 12 miles to the east.

Per CBC in 2013, fossilized footprints were discovered on Calvert Island, carbon-dated back to 13,200 years. Nearby Triquet Island, per Calvert Island’s Hakai Institute, as reported in Smithsonian Magazine in 2017, contains an Ice Age/ Heiltsuk Village ruins carbon-dated at 14,000 years old. Both sites are three times older than the Egyptian Pyramids.”
