Protection Island is a 27 acre private island located on the east side of Cortes Island and in the entrance to Squirrel Cove. The location is just west of Desolation Sound a coastal destination which is well-known around the world and extremely popular with boaters.
This uniquely situated island offers an array of features. The island has over 1 mile of diverse low-bank shoreline with multiple bays, coves and peninsulas. The topography is relatively gentle to moderate and easy to walk. This is a heavily treed property with a number of exceptionally large old-growth fir and cedar in amongst a beautifully mixed forest.
Oriented from the south-east to the north-west the island enjoys lots of sunny exposure as well as beautiful unobstructed views across Desolation Sound and down the Strait of Georgia. The Squirrel Cove side of the property is a well-known anchorage and provides excellent protected deep-water moorage.
This is a fantastic canvas to develop as your island retreat. There are a number of locations that would be excellent building sites and a variety of walking trails could be cleared throughout this diverse landscape which could also easily accommodate small all-terrain vehicles.
Access to Cortes Island is literally within minutes at the Government Dock in Squirrel Cove. Squirrel Cove General Store offers a variety of supplies and services including fuel, building materials, a liquor store and post office as well as groceries and sundry items.
The cities of Campbell River and Powell River are both located approx. 20 nautical miles away with quicker access to the northern Sunshine Coast via Okeover Inlet, about 13 nautical miles away.
The Discovery Islands are considered major gateways to the very popular Desolation Sound region; well known for its waterfalls, secret coves, rock cliffs and tranquil natural beauty with plenty of opportunity for wildlife viewing, including bald eagles and bears. For the outdoor enthusiast the recreation possibilities here are endless and of an unrivalled quality; it is truly one of the best jumping off points for a variety of outdoor activities including fishing, prawning, kayaking and hiking. This area enjoys a nice temperate climate and the waters here are warmer than in most other areas on the coast. The breathtaking silence that surrounds these islands is characteristic of the ambience in remote coastal locations.
